UAL-MEC Membership Committee Report

David A. Smith, Membership Committee Chair

The View From 33, March 2000

Statistics
United hired 799 new pilots in 1999 for a total of 10,186 pilots on our property on December 31.  That is the first time in our airline's history that the total number of United pilots exceeded 10,000.  Of that number, 9,742 were members of the Association in good standing.  While we have had a low number of numbers who found themselves delinquent over the past few years, it is the MEC's direction to aggressively pursue the agency shop side letter.

There were approximately 56,000+ members of ALPA International at the close of 1999.  The six largest air carriers make up approximately 65 percent of the total ALPA membership.  These airlines are:
  1.  United Airlines
2.  Delta Airlines
3.  Northwest Airlines
4.  US Airways
5.  American Eagle
6.  Trans World Airlines

Of all the present-day United pilots, over 83 percent were hired after the strike of 1985.  By the beginning of 2002, this number will increase to about 92 percent!  The year 2000 has the potential to be the greatest for pilot hiring this airline has ever seen.  Our total hiring numbers for the past decade are as follows:
