New Hires
There were 543 pilots hired in 1998. The average age of these pilots is 35.1 years. Projection for 1999 is currently 800, but always subject to change. Since May 1985, there have been 7,495 pilots hired who are currently on the seniority list while 2,302 were hired prior to that date. This equates to 76.5% and 23.5%, respectively.

United Pilot Group
As of Dec. 31, 1998, there are 9,797 pilots on the UAL S/0 Seniority List, which includes 268 who are MD/IL. There are 273 over age-60 second officers currently flying. There are 9,377 pilots less than age 60 of whom 121 are on the MD/EL status.

ALPA National
As of Jan. 5, 1999, United represents 9,820 pilots of whom 9,325 are ALPA members - 495 are not (numbers include new-hire class of Jan. 4, 1999).

 There are currently 51,572 pilots represented by ALPA: United with 9,686 (18.8%); Delta with 9,163 (17.8%); Northwest with 6,128 (11.9%); USAirways with 5,083 (9.9%); TWA with 2,510 (4.9%); and American Eagle with 1,975 (3.8%). Combined, these airlines represent 34,545 (67%).
