FLIGHT OPS FLYER August 28, 1998 **************** *************** If there is a strike at Northwest --------------------------------- If Northwest's pilots go on strike at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, Saturday, August 29, there may be an increased demand for cockpit jumpseats (and cabin seats) on United. Commuters should note that although the prudent judgment policy is still in effect, a bit of extra prudence (additional back-up flights) might be in order. Regardless of whether or not there is a strike, United will continue its polity of offering OMC authority to Northwest pilots at priority L-2. United asked the FAA for permission to allow Northwest pilots and flight attendants to ride on United cabin jumpseats, but the request was denied. Therefore, they may not be accommodated on cabin jumpseats under any circumstances. Finally, remember that it is prohibited to carry more OMCs than there are cockpit jumpseats. First ANCFO Domicile Meeting a Success -------------------------------------- Seventeen months after opening in March 1997, ANCFO held its first domicile meeting on August 20. Approximately 40 percent of the domicile's 115 pilots attended the meeting, where they heard presentations from speakers including United President John Edwardson, Sr. Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Hart Langer, Vice President-Resource Planning Monte Brewer and Vice President-Worldwide Cargo Jim Hartigan. "I would like to thank everyone who participated in our first domicile meeting," said ANCFO Chief Pilot Captain Al Pittman. "I couldn't be prouder of our pilots and the staff, who have worked together in the spirit of the new culture to build a team and make the domicile a success." A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the inaugural "ANCFO Anchor Award" to SEAMM Team Leader- Maintenance Services Rich Jorgenson. In making the presentation, Captain Pittman cited Rich for his total dedication to the freighter operation: "Rich has earned the respect of the ANCFO pilots. He has been a key factor in the success of the freighter operation." United to open JFK A320 Domicile -------------------------------- Manager-Manpower Planning Claire Fitzpatrick this week officially announced plans to open an A320 domicile at JFK effective March 2, 1999. Flight Crew Resources initially will post 20 Captain and 20 First Officer vacancies, with plans to grow the domicile to support 30 lines as quickly as possible. In the coming week, pilots will receive in their domicile mailboxes a letter from Fitzpatrick announcing the new domicile and explaining the vacancy and contingency bidding process for it. "This is a new equipment domicile under section 8-Q of the pilot Agreement, and as such, is subject to relaxed freeze restrictions," Fitzpatrick says in her letter. "Basically, you can be awarded a JFK A320 vacancy regardless of any current freeze; however, any current freeze will be added to your new freeze if awarded one of these vacancies." Fitzpatrick requests that pilots contact their local flight office with any questions about freezes or contingency bidding.
