FLIGHT OPS FLYER September 4, 1998 **************** ***************** Aircraft Scheduling Updates --------------------------- Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung clarified two recent Aircraft Scheduling issues of concern to our pilots: planned South America flying for the JFK A320 domicile and the delayed closing of the DEN B737-200 domicile. The current firm plans for JFK A320 South America flying include JFK-CCS and MIA-CCS routes. Planning currently is analyzing the possibility of JFK A320 pilots also flying a MIA-LIM-SCL routing. The possibility of that remains uncertain at this time. Crew Resources also confirmed a delay in the closing of the DEN B737-200 domicile until summer 1999, due to an increase in the projected flying hours of the fleet. United currently is using the B737-200 airplanes as spares but made a decision to place them into revenue service and use A319s for the spare airplane flying mission. With the increased flying hours for the B737-200s, Flight Crew Resources needs to hold onto the DEN B737-200 pilots longer. The department will be surplusing some B737-200 pilots each bid period beginning in October. Flight Center Personnel Announcement ------------------------------------ Vice President Flight Standards & Training Captain J.D. Whitlatch announced today the appointment of two Fleet Captains, effective immediately. DC10 Fleet Captain Bob O'Brien has been appointed to the position of B747-400 Fleet Captain. Captain O'Brien joined United in 1966. He has held several positions at the Flight Center as B737 and DC10 Training Check Airman, Standards Captain and Flight Manager, as well as an A320 Line Check Airman. O'Brien has flown as Captain on the B737-200, B737- 300, A320, DC10, and B747-400. O'Brien replaces Captain Bill Dias who is the new Manager-Flight Contract Training. B747-100 Fleet Captain Chuck Arthur has been appointed to the position of B727 Fleet Captain. Captain Arthur joined United in 1984. Arthur formerly served as an A320 Standards Captain, B737 Training Check Airman and B727 Flight Operations Instructor. He has flown Captain on the B737- 300, A320 and B747-100 fleets. Arthur replaces Captain Jack Hareland who returned to the line. IADFO Welcomes New Flight Manager --------------------------------- IAD Chief Pilot Captain Roy Liggett announced this week his selection of Captain Mary Ann Schaffer as the domicile's new Flight Manager, effective Sept. 7. Schaffer began her flying career with United on May 1, 1989, as a B727 S/O based at JFK. She moved on to fly the B737, B767 and B777 fleets as a F/O before becoming a B727 Captain. Schaffer served on the Total Airline Pilot (TAP) team and plays an active role as a mentor for women pilots. New Pilotbrief Sign-On Effective Oct. 1 --------------------------------------- Based on pilot feedback and to become standard with other computer terminal sign-on procedures, access procedures for internet weather graphics (Pilotbrief) will be changed Oct. 1. On the subscriber log on screen, Pilotbrief users will be required to preface their file numbers with a lowercase letter `u' in the user name field. The complete format for the user name, for example, will be: u0123456. Until further notice, the user's last name -- all in lowercase -- will serve as the password. As of Sept. 4, one week after the survey reached mailboxes, approximately 400 (four percent) Flight Operations employees had already filled out and returned the survey. Catering Changes the Salad Special Meal --------------------------------------- United's catering service has eliminated the Chef Salad meal option for both customer and crew meals. Catering has replaced it with a general "salad" option, which could include anything from a typical green salad, to a pasta salad, to pears and goat cheese. The designator in the Special Meal display remains unchanged as SAML, but it is now called a "Salad Meal." Please update your SPCMEL display if you don't desire the new salad option. Welcome Aboard -------------- There was no new-hire pilot class this week. The number of new hires for 1998 remains at 304. Safety Issues ------------- There were no flight safety inquiries this week. ************************************************************ Flight Operations Communications, WHQVF 847/700-7288 September 4, 1998 *****************
