FLIGHT OPS FLYER October 2, 1998 **************** *************** Flight Ops Seeks HNLFO Chief Pilot Candidates --------------------------------------------- In a September 28 job posting, Flight Operations announced that it is seeking candidates for the HNLFO Chief Pilot position. Current Chief Pilot Captain Rick Maloney will become the Chief Pilot at ORDFO effective November 1. Qualifications include three years as a UA Captain, two years in UA management, one year as a UA Line Check Airman, Standards Captain or Pilot Instructor Check Airman, and demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., UA, ALPA, military, civic). The ideal candidate will also have a four-year college degree, one year UA domicile management experience, one year DENTK management or project experience, experience working with other Flight Operations departments and other divisions, experience working with industry and government organizations and international experience. Interested candidates should submit a self-nomination form to WHQPX-Job Posting by October 8. Change to Landing Currency Requirements --------------------------------------- On October 6 there will be a change to landing currency requirements. Although the FAR requiring three takeoffs and landings within the past 90-day period remains unchanged, the new policy will also require that all First Officers make at least one aircraft takeoff and landing or have completed a PC/CQP in the last 90 days in order to be the PF in less than VMC conditions. The exception is First Officers who are paired with an LCA in the left seat or in VMC conditions. The landing information contained in the PLTBRF has been modified to include actual aircraft landings and simulator landings (annotated with an `S') separately. The PC/CQP data is also depicted. FOM revisions are in the mail. International Water Provisioning for Crews Increased ---------------------------------------------------- On October 1, the new policy governing bottled water boarded for crewmembers on international flights took effect. In addition to the quantities that are already boarded for passengers in United Business and United First, 1/2 liter of bottled water will now be boarded for each crewmember. International Food and Beverage (WHQHA) conducted extensive research on space and provisioning requirements and it came as no surprise that space continues to be a significant factor. ALPA also conducted a study on the amounts of water (hydration) which potentially would be required by a crewmember during flight. WHQHA used this information as a guide in computing the amount of water to be boarded. In the past, especially in the Pacific, WHQHA often found significant amounts of bottled water left over after a flight. Because of this, WHQHA has chosen to include bottled water as part of normal beverage provisioning to see what the actual need will be. Flight Ops will be watching this closely and appreciates your feedback. If the current plan does not work, it will be modified. To give the new policy a fair chance of working, pilots and flight attendants should work together to manage the onboard water situation appropriately. Feedback may be given to your domicile. Ticket Refunds will be mailed to Customers, Employees ----------------------------------------------------- Effective October 15, employees and customers who request refunds for tickets purchased with cash or a check will no longer receive immediate refunds at airports and City Ticket Offices. Instead, they will turn in their tickets at the counter and a United accounting office will mail a refund check to them in approximately three to five days -- providing their initial purchase check has cleared the bank. Any ticket paid for by check must be at least 14 days old before a refund can be granted. Refunds for tickets purchased with a credit card will continue to be credited back to the credit card account at ticket counters. In addition to reducing fraud from refunds issued before the customers' checks had clear their banks, the policy change is being implemented because many front-line employees suggested the idea as a way to reduce process times at airports and City Ticket Offices. New Pilotbrief Sign-On ---------------------- Sign-on procedures for internet weather graphics (Pilotbrief) changed on October 1. Pilots must now use the lower case letter `u' in front of their file number in the user name field. The complete format is, for example, u0123456. The user's last name will serve as the password until further notice. Welcome Aboard -------------- Sixteen new-hire pilots began training at the Flight Center this week, bringing the 1998 total to 369. The latest assigned pilot number was 9634.
