FLIGHT OPS FLYER DECEMBER 24, 1999 A Holiday Message from Captain Steve Forte ------------------------------------------ "1999 was a memorable year. We faced many challenges, including irregular operations, ATC delays, crew shortages and a fire at World Headquarters. Through it all the employees of Flight Operations remained committed to safety and service to our customers. I would like to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication to excellence. Happy Holidays to you and your families, and I wish you all a safe and healthy year 2000." If You're Flying on December 31 . . . ------------------------------------- The new millennium is almost here and United Airlines is ready. The company will operate "business as usual" during the New Year's week-end. Although pilots working on December 31 and January 1 may notice the following precautionary measures in place, they are not indicative of any expected Y2K difficulties: ** Preferred routes will be filed within the United States. ** Regionally-coordinated, unidirectional routes must be flown through many international locations. ** Departures may be re-timed to avoid aircraft being on international runways within 30 minutes of midnight (local or UTC). ** Flights close to midnight -- UTC and local -- will have additional fuel loaded. ** Some international routes -- primarily Latin America and Asia -- will experience increased separation. ** Dispatch will use ACARS to contact all international flights and selected domestic flights after midnight-UTC. For further information refer to the Y2K Flight Operations binder in place at all domiciles. You may also contact Manager-Flight Operations Automation Michele Manoski at (U) 700-3022 or (847) 700-3022. A Few More Y2K Reminders ------------------------ United has issued the following reminders for all employees to keep in mind during the Y2K week-end: ** Ground employees not working over the week-end should shut down workstations and handle other office equipment according to regular procedures. There is no need to do anything differently prior to leaving for the holiday week-end. ** Employees should update the virus protection software on their computers to protect from potential viruses that may surface in the coming weeks. Anyone who needs assistance with updating, installing or running Norton AntiVirus software or anyone who encounters a virus that cannot be repaired should contact their LAN administrator or United's help desk at Unitel 700-5800. ** To prevent an overload of the telephone system, employees are urged not to check their telephones or voice mail messages between 11 p.m. on December 31 and 1 a.m. on January 1. ** Due to the busy holiday traffic and heightened security, employees should keep their photo identification displayed at all times when working. ** For news and information, employees should continue to watch for NewsReals and other regular forms of communications. Corporate Communications will continue to publish and distribute NewsReal through normal channels. If normal NewsReal upload procedures are not available, corporate communications will use meters to send information to stations systemwide. ** United Airlines employees may speak with reporters only if they have received prior approval from the Media Relations department in Corporate Communications (WHQPR). ** If you are approached by a reporter for an interview or a comment, you must decline the interview opportunity and refer the reporter to Media Relations at (847) 700-5538.
