FLIGHT OPS FLYER DECEMBER 11, 1998 **************** ***************** UAL/ALPA REACH AGREEMENT ON B777 CREW REST ISSUE ------------------------------------------------ UNITED AND THE AIR LINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION REACHED AN AGREEMENT REGARDING THE B777 CREW REST ISSUE. THE AGREEMENT PROVIDES FOR A CREW REST FACILITY SIMILAR TO THE B747-400 ON ALL B777B MODEL AIRCRAFT AND ENSURES THAT THE GENESIS FIRST CLASS SEAT WILL BE INSTALLED ON ALL THREE-CLASS B777A MODEL AIRCRAFT, ONE OF WHICH WILL BE DEDICATED AS THE CREW REST FACILITY. WITH THE RESOLUTION OF THIS ISSUE, THE COMPANY CAN PROCEED WITH ITS PLANS TO OPERATE THE B777 ON VARIOUS PACIFIC ROUTES IN RESPONSE TO COMPETITIVE AND ECONOMIC NEEDS. DOD CONCLUDES SURVEY -------------------- THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD) AIR CARRIER SURVEY AND ANALYSIS TEAM CONCLUDED ITS BI-ANNUAL AIR CARRIER SURVEY OF UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT OPERATIONS AND TRAINING DEPARTMENT IN NOVEMBER. UNDER CONGRESSIONAL MANDATE, THE DOD IS REQUIRED TO INSPECT ANY AIR CARRIER THAT HAS A CONTRACT TO CARRY DOD PERSONNEL. IN 1997, THE DOD SPENT MORE THAN $140 MILLION OF TRAVEL ON UNITED. WHILE THE DODS FINAL WRITTEN REPORT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL JANUARY 1999, THE INITIAL EVALUATION WAS VERY POSITIVE. AREAS CITED AS EXCEEDING STANDARD AT WHQ INCLUDE DISPATCH, HAZMAT, AND FLIGHT ATTENDANT TRAINING. THE TEAM DESCRIBED FLIGHT SAFETY AS AN INDUSTRY MODEL. THE FLIGHT CENTER MET OR EXCEEDED DOD STANDARDS IN EVERY CATEGORY, AND THE DOD CITED SEVERAL FUNCTIONS AS INDUSTRY MODELS. THESE INCLUDE COMBINED PILOT/FLIGHT ATTENDANT EMERGENCY PROCEDURE TRAINING, NEW PILOT HIRING AND TRAINING, AND AQP. A PRIORITY FLIGHT MANAGEMENT REMINDER ------------------------------------- IF YOUR FLIGHT PLAN CRUISE MACH SPEED EXCEEDS STD POLICY MACH, THIS GIVES YOU THE OPTION OF FLYING FAST IF IT MAKES SENSE. ONCE ENROUTE, WEIGH ALL THE FACTORS AND IF NORMAL CRUISE MACH WILL ENSURE AN ON-TIME OR EARLY ARRIVAL, CONSIDER THE PRUDENCE OF FLYING NORMAL MACH SPEED AND/OR A MORE OPTIMUM ALTITUDE.
