FLIGHT OPS FLYER NOVEMBER 19, 1999 **************** ***************** Company Presents Proposal ------------------------- On Tuesday, November 9, the company presented to the ALPA Negotiating Committee a comprehensive proposal for a seamless amendment to the April 12, 2000 pilot contract. The proposal is designed to ensure the long term profitable growth of the company. ACARS Delay Codes Continue to Pinpoint Reasons for Delays --------------------------------------------------------- Since the program was implemented in mid-October, pilots have sent in over 1800 coded delay messages as part of on- going efforts to track and solve delay problems both internally at United and externally with ATC. Flight Operations, working with ALPA, established a list of ACARS miscellaneous codes to communicate the reason for a delay. ACARS/TCAS Moratorium Bulletin 99-01 contains three sets of codes for taxi-out, enroute and taxi in. The codes go into a special database that gives the company a better picture of airport /ATC systems problems. "Thanks to all pilots who are submitting these codes during delays," says Sr. Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Steve Forte. "The information helps us address the causes of delays and improve operational performance." Waits for Weight Checks Declining at Hubs ----------------------------------------- Since December 1998, wait times for weight checks have been declining at Hub stations, another measure of United's improving operational performance. The following chart shows the improvements, expressed as a percentage of flights that wait 8 minutes or longer. Hub December 1998 November 1999 (through 11/14) --- ------------- ------------- ORD 19.7 percent 7.5 percent DEN 9.1 percent 5.8 percent SFO 10.8 percent 9.7 percent LAX 15.4 percent 5.9 percent IAD 24.7 percent 8.5 percent Got a Climate Survey? Respond by November 30 --------------------------------------------- United's second Employee Climate Survey of 1999 - sent to a random sampling of 35,000 employees earlier this month - is due November 30. Employees who receive this survey can help United track its progress since March, when the company surveyed all employees. This is the first time employees can reply to the survey via the Internet at www.unitedclimatesurvey.com. Employees who prefer to respond by touch-tone telephone still have that option. As of November 19, nearly 15 percent of employees who received the survey have responded, and about 20 percent of those have used the Internet.
