Contract Administration -------------------------------------------------------- Senior Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Hart Langer today announced the appointment of Chuck Vanderheiden as Director-Flight Contract Administration, WHQVF, effective immediately. Chuck fills the position of Jerry Andrews, who retired on June 30 after 42 years with the company. For the past three years Vanderheiden has served as Director-Labor Relations for Flight Operations employees. In his 31 years with United, he has held a variety of management positions, including Manager-Flight Attendant Scheduling Operations and station manager in Monterey. Captain Pete Davis will continue to represent the company on United's negotiating team. Staff Representative-Flight Contract Administration Jennifer Dziepak will report to Vanderheiden. Bottled Water Policy Revised ---------------------------- In response to pilot feedback, the policy for boarding bottled water on international flights has been revised. Beginning November 16, on international flights of 8 hours or less, catering will deliver to the cockpit one liter of bottled water for each pilot assigned to the flight. On international flights longer than 8 hours, two liters of bottled water per pilot will be delivered. On transcontinental flights one liter of bottled water per pilot will be delivered. These amounts are in addition to the bottled water currently boarded under the policy that went into effect October 1, and pilots may continue to request additional water or other beverages from the normal provisioning for the flight. The water bottles will be placed on the cockpit floor by catering anytime up until ten minutes prior to departure. Pilots should store the bottles in any approved cockpit storage location. Bottled water is boarded for consumption during the flight and should not be removed from the aircraft. Another EGPWS Milestone ----------------------- On November 8, 1998, United successfully completed the Supplemental Type Certificate process for the B767-300ER Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) installation. This was accomplished during a test flight of aircraft 6653, the airplane painted in the Star Alliance colors. This brings the total number of United EGPWS-equipped aircraft to 90. United's first EGPWS installation, the first in the industry, was in October 1996. Currently United has the second largest EGPWS-equipped fleet. American has the most, with approximately 350 aircraft installations completed since their program began in 1997. Great in `98! It's Time for Annual Awards ------------------------------------------ Do you know someone who's done something great in 1998? A co-worker who always goes out of their way to help? An employee who is committed to customer satisfaction? You can recognize their excellence and celebrate their success by nominating them for a 1998 Flight Operations Annual Award. Nomination forms are available now and can be turned in to your Chief Pilot or local recognition team member by January 8, 1999. Winners will be honored at the 1998 Flight Operations Annual Awards dinner at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on March 16, 1999. An OMC Reminder --------------- In order to help Customer Service fill all the seats in the aircraft, pilots traveling OMC are requested to refrain from taking a cabin seat until the boarding is complete and the final count is taken for Customer Service. This will help CS get all the revenue customers onboard as well as accommodate our pass-riding employees and their eligibles. As always, the Captain determines if an OMC may sit in the cabin. Coordination with the Purser is recommended as a professional courtesy. Open cabin seats to be occupied by either OMCs or CJAs will be based upon company seniority. See FOM page OI-82 for more information. Welcome Aboard -------------- Twenty-one new-hire pilots began training at the Flight Center this week, bringing the 1998 total to 476.
