FLIGHT OPS FLYER NOVEMBER 12, 1999 **************** ***************** Flight Operations Implements Flight Safety Officers --------------------------------------------------- In order to better facilitate the flow of safety information to and from United pilots, Flight Operations has designated a Flight Manager or Chief Pilot from each domicile and the Flight Center to serve as Flight Safety Officers. Manager- Line Operations Captain Denny Lessard oversees the group and coordinates its efforts. The Flight Safety Officers held their first meeting this week and received training on the FOQA and Corporate Flight Safety programs. The group plans to meet quarterly and communicate via conference calls at least monthly. The group also determined goals and established an objective to provide viable safety information to line pilots through personal contact at the domiciles. "Because the members of this group will work alongside the LEC chairpersons, while providing a point of contact at the domiciles and the Flight Center, we believe our coordinated efforts will foster a culture of the highest level of safety awareness," Lessard says. The Domicile Safety Officers include: ANC Captain Cliff Russell DEN Captain Jon Carter HNL Captain Chuck Arthur IAD Captain Mary Ann Schaffer JFK Captain Jim Brundige LAX Captain Tom McDermott MIA Captain Steve Jones ORD Captain Chuck Crosby SEA Captain Pat Durgan SFO Captain Ana Vegega DTK Captain Bob Howard Domicile Closings Announced --------------------------- Flight Crew Resources officially announced the closing of the HNL B747 domicile and the LAX DC10 domicile late last month. The closings come as a result of the corporate fleet simplification plans. Both equipment domiciles will close effective Jan. 31, 2000. The fleet simplification plan calls for six fewer DC10 aircraft in the schedule by January 2000. Flight Crew Resources anticipates closing the SFO DC10 domicile in late 2000, although the plans are not firm. The closing of the HNL B747 domicile takes place in conjunction with the opening of the HNL B400 domicile and will leave SFO as the remaining B747 domicile. Two letters from Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung dated Oct. 30, 1999, - one addressed to HNL B747 pilots and one addressed to LAX DC10 pilots - include the surplus details and bumping rights. Affected pilots are required to submit bumps in Unimatic by noon local domicile time Nov. 19, 1999. The letters were sent to domicile mailboxes last week. Dispatchers Attend Fall Recurrent Training ------------------------------------------ United's nearly 180 Flight dispatchers completed fall recurrent training this month. The five separate sessions began Oct. 13 and concluded Nov. 5. The training - conducted each spring and fall - comprises two eight-hour sessions and provides dispatchers an opportunity to brush up on current skills, as well as review policies, procedures and new equipment and aircraft types. Staff Instructor- Flight Dispatch George Rigert said some of the topics covered this fall included winter ops, icing and turbulence, fog seeding and enroute mechanical emergencies. Many guest speakers shared information at the classes. An FBI special agent helped present a portion of the group's study on aircraft security. ORD Shift Manager-Station Control Bob Ryan spoke about hub operations. Mike Evanoff and James Lund from Operational Engineering presented MEL overview information. Load Planning Instructors Catherine Anderson and Ken Urban covered load planning procedures. Sathya Venkatapathy from ISD presented new operational decision tools. Flight Operations leaders - including Senior Vice President Captain Steve Forte, Managing Director-Line Operations and System Chief Pilot Captain Rick Maloney and Director-Flight Operations Control Captain Hank Krakowski - each attended some sessions to share division goals and to answer dispatcher questions. It's Not too Late to Show You Care ---------------------------------- When the United We Care campaign drew to a close last month, the Flight Operations Division employees had pledged to give more than $1.4 million, falling just shy of the $1.6 million division goal. Many employees chose to make their pledge on-line via Skynet, United's intranet, for the first time, with more than $40,000 received that way. "I want to thank all of the employees who gave in this year's United We Care campaign," says LAX Shuttle Captain Cheryl Kelly, the Flight Operations Division coordinator. "Some individuals gave incredibly generous one-time pledges. It's so encouraging to see that during this time of economic prosperity, some people really want to provide generously for the less fortunate." It's not too late to partake in the campaign and help Flight Operations achieve its goal. Employees can pledge via Skynet through the end of the month, or they can send their pledge cards directly to Sue Britton-Opitz at WHQDV through the first week of December.
