FLIGHT OPS FLYER OCTOBER 22, 1999 **************** **************** Division Participates in Successful Y2K Test -------------------------------------------- In preparation for the year 2000, the Flight Operations division on October 20 participated in a company-wide Y2K rollover test. More than 630 locations, including airports, station control centers, reservations sites, cargo facilities, and World Headquarters departments collaborated on the 24-hour Y2K readiness drill. Participants around the world followed the Year 2000 communications plan to report their status when the mock date change occurred at their location. According to Flight Operations Manager-Automation Michele Manoski, the test went well and was considered a success. A key component of the testing was using a web-based reporting system - United's intranet - to monitor and report results. Problems that were identified during testing were flagged so that improved processes can be developed to ensure a successful rollover to 2000. "Everyone who was in the test feels more comfortable using the system," says Manoski. "We've also made some suggestions for improvements for the actual rollover, based on what we learned during the test. Thanks to everyone who participated in this crucial Y2K readiness test. Going through this `dress rehearsal' has increased our confidence that the actual rollover will go smoothly." Domicile Y2K roadshows are scheduled for November and December. Additional details about dates will be provided as they are finalized. ACARS/TCAS Moratorium Bulletin 99-01 contains three sets of codes: Taxi-out codes are used for delays incurred after block out and are in addition to any delay getting off the gate; enroute delay codes are used for the enroute portion of the flight; and taxi-in codes are used for the taxi-in portion of flight. Pilots should the ACARS MISC page and enter the appropriate code for the affected phase of flight. These codes will go into a special database which will both distribute them to various operational departments and generate summary reports to identify specific delays types and location. Free form text can also be added to any code, and the codes can be downlinked at any time during flight until block in.
