FLIGHT OPS FLYER October 16, 1998 **************** **************** Dispatchers Attend Fall Recurrent Training --------------------------------------------------- United's nearly 170 Flight Dispatchers will attend fall recurrent training this month or next. The first session began Oct. 13 and the last session will take place on Nov. 19. The training -- conducted each spring and fall -- comprises two eight-hour sessions and provides dispatchers an opportunity to brush up on current skills, as well as review policies, procedures and new equipment and aircraft types. Staff Instructor-Flight Dispatch George Rigert said topics covered this fall will include: winter operations; ATC procedures; aircraft systems and performance; flight releasing; flight safety investigations; single segment dispatching; data link; sexual harassment; and fuel policy and conservation, which pilots will present. Division Gears Up for Giving ---------------------------- The Flight Operations Division is on its way to doing its fair share in this year's United We Care/United Employees Charitable Program (UWC/UECP) campaign scheduled for this month. Pilot Instructor Cheryl Kelly, the Flight Operations Division Coordinator, recently announced the names of the division's 1998 local campaign coordinators. WHQCM Accepting Vacation Deferral Requests ------------------------------------------ Flight Crew Resources is soliciting vacation deferrals to support Aircraft Scheduling's plan to add domestic flying between now and January -- historically a period where United has reduced flying and allowed WHQCM to liquidate vacation. Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung said in a letter to all pilots last month that WHQCM is targeting deferrals from B767 and B300 Captains, where the department anticipates deferring approximately 6,100 B767 Captain vacation days and 2,300 B300 Captain vacation days. "To meet our strategic objectives, we would like to solicit those pilots who would like to defer some or all of their February, March and April vacation and any unassigned vacation remaining after the January assignments are complete," Lung added. "We will consider deferrals from all fleets to provide us maximum flexibility." The deferral is in accordance with Section 11-F of the 1994 Pilot Contract. Pilots must submit their requests to their local domicile administrators by Nov. 2 at noon Central Time. Pilots whose deferral requests are accepted will be notified via their company mailboxes. Welcome Aboard -------------- Seventeen new-hire pilots began training at the Flight Center this week, bringing the 1998 total to 403. The latest assigned pilot number was 9668.
