FLIGHT OPS FLYER September 24, 1999 **************** ****************** Captain Hart Langer Retires --------------------------- After serving as Senior Vice President-Flight Operations for 10 years, Captain Hart Langer this week flew his final flight and began retirement. Upon arrival at ORD gate C-23 on Monday, September 20, flight 895 from LGA received the traditional water arch salute, followed by an exuberant gateroom welcome from cheering employees and customers. Addressing the group, Langer reflected on the spirit of teamwork exhibited by United employees. Captain Langer joined United in January 1989, following a 21-year career at Pan American World Airways. Captain Langer holds airman certificates as an airline transport pilot with type ratings on Boeing 707, 727, 737, 747, 757/767, 747-400, 777, Lockheed 1011, Airbus A300, A310 and DA 20 aircraft. He served as an instructor pilot in the United States Air Force, and holds a bachelor of science degree from Pennsylvania State University. "On behalf of everyone in Flight Operations, congratulations and our thanks to Hart," says Senior Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Steve Forte. "Throughout his distinguished career, he has provided outstanding leadership in Flight Operations, in the company and in the airline industry. Director Positions Created to Achieve Operational Goals ------------------------------------------------------- Senior Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Steve Forte this week announced the creation of two new Director positions in Flight Operations. The positions are Director- Flight Crew Planning & Analysis, WHQCM, reporting to the Senior Vice President; and Director-Flight Operations Control, WHQFO, reporting to Captain Rick Maloney, Managing Director-Line Operations and System Chief Pilot. The new positions are designed to sharpen the Division's focus on achieving key operational goals. Chuck Roichek, currently Manager-Business Systems Development in the Information Services Division (ISD), has been selected to fill the Director-Flight Crew Planning & Analysis position. Before moving to ISD, he served as Manager-Manpower Planning in Flight Operations for four years. He joined United in 1986 and also held positions in Financial Planning & Analysis and International Human Resources. He will be responsible for the Manpower Planning and Crew Schedule Analysis groups in WHQCM. Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung will continue to be the liaison with the ALPA System Schedule Committee and the Pilot Contract Negotiating Team and have responsibility for the Lines of Flying and DSL groups. The second new position, Director-Flight Operations Control, was posted on 9/23, and interested candidates are invited to self-nominate. The position will be responsible for the Flight Dispatch, Meteorology, Air Traffic Control and Flight Crew Operations Control (OPBCM) organizations in achieving the safe, reliable and efficient utilization of aircraft and flight crew resources. Job requirements include five years of management experience in an operational environment; the ability to manage in an ever-changing, often "crisis' environment; experience working with the FAA; and an undergraduate degree, preferably in business or airline management. A graduate degree and a dispatch or meteorology license are preferred. Interested candidates should submit a resume and self- nomination form to WHQLR-job posting by Oct. 3. HNL B747, LAX DC10 domicile closing dates ----------------------------------------- Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung has announced that both the HNL B747 and LAX DC-10 domiciles will now close on January 31, 2000. These have been updated from the original Jan. 1 date in the Notice of Proposed Decision Making letters to ALPA. Welcome Aboard -------------- Twenty-five new-hire pilots started training at the Flight Center this week, bringing the number of 1999 new hires to 589.
