FLIGHT OPS FLYER September 3, 1999 **************** ***************** Flight Center Seeks P/I's ------------------------- The Flight Center needs to attract and recruit pilot instructors (P/I's). Forecasts for upcoming transition training, pilot new-hire, pilot retirement and aircraft delivery projections will increase United's training requirements at the Flight Center in 2000 and create the need for additional P/I's. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact their flight manager or Chief Pilot to discuss the position. Flight Center Fills Additional Positions ---------------------------------------- Vice President-Flight Standards and Training Captain Bill Rutherford this week announced the appointment of three new positions at the Flight Center. The new Manager-Flight Standards is Captain Bob Howard. Most recently a Flight Manager in the B737-300/500 fleet, Bob also brings Standards Captain and TCA experience to his new role. He began with United as a line pilot in 1979 and served in the United States Air Force in Active and Reserve Duty for 21 years. He received a master's degree from Florida State University. The new Manager-Flight Operations Support is Captain Lew Kosich. Lew most recently served as B777 Fleet Captain and has been a Standards Captain, Program and Project coordinator and TCA. He began as a pilot with United in 1979 after serving as a fighter and test pilot with the United States Navy. He received a bachelor of science degree from the United States Naval Academy. The new Senior Staff Coordinator-Project Oversight is Jacqueline Rainey. Jacqueline moves to the position from her current job as Program Support Coordinator for the B737- 200 fleet. She came to United in 1989 after gaining more than three years of airline operations experience at Aspen Airways. Jacqueline holds a bachelor of science degree from Metropolitan State College of Denver. More positions will be announced as the Flight Center continues to implement the recommendations of the Fleet Support Restructure Team. OCC Employees Return to WHQ Following Fire ------------------------------------------ The Operations Control Center made a successful move from Chicago Reservations back to WHQ with the midnight shift of Aug. 31. The move went smoothly thanks to outstanding efforts by employees in Flight Dispatch, Flight and Onboard Crew Scheduling, Meteorology and System Operations Control, as well as Chicago Reservations, ISD, Facilities and other support staff. While the OCC has returned to WHQ, Flight Crew Resources continues to work at Chicago Reservations and other Flight Ops organizations are working at various locations, making some coordination difficult. We appreciate the continued cooperation and understanding of our internal customers during this challenging time. ORD Employees Helpful During Security Breach -------------------------------------------- O'Hare employees were put to the test Aug. 26 when a security breach forced the evacuation of Terminal One. On behalf of Flight Operations, Senior Vice President Captain Steve Forte wants to thank all of our employees who were affected by the delays and cancellations, and especially our ORD domicile employees and pilots at ORD who went beyond the call to help clear the concourses and communicate with our customers during the evacuation and its aftermath. Videos Arrive at Pilots' Homes ------------------------------ Pilots will find in their home mailboxes this week a video from United titled "Domestic Fuel Policy." The 15-minute video -- scheduled to arrive at homes Sept. 1-3 -- outlines the new domestic Flight Plan Forecast and Dispatch Release Message (FPF and DRM) debuting later this year. Pilots are encouraged to view the video, which offers a visual way of presenting the information also outlined in the Sept. 3 Jeppesen Revision Briefing Sheet. Additionally, the Oct. 1 FOM revision will contain updated FPF and DRM information in the "Definitions," "Dispatch" and "Forms" chapters. Copies of the video are available to Flight Dispatchers at their work location. The timeline for the rollout of the new FPF and DRM includes flight testing of the system in late September with domestic implementation of the plan in late October. Welcome Aboard -------------- There was no new-hire class at the Flight Center this week. The number of 1999 pilot new hires remains at 513. ************************************************************ Flight Operations Communications, WHQVF 847/700-7288 Current and past issues of "Flight Ops Flyer" are available on Flite Site, the Flight Ops pages in Skynet, United's intranet, and in Library 13 in the UAL Employees Forum in CompuServe.
