FLIGHT OPS FLYER August 6, 1999 **************** ************** Four New Chief Pilots Announced ------------------------------- Managing Director-Line Operations and System Chief Pilot Captain Rick Maloney this week announced the selection of four new Chief Pilots, filling vacancies in ORD, MIA, SEA and ANC. The new Chief Pilots at ORD and MIA were effective August 4, at SEA and ANC they will report September 1. The new Chief Pilot at ORD is Captain Brad Thomann, replacing Captain Rick Maloney who moved to the System Chief Pilot position. Currently the Flight Manager at MIAFO, Captain Thomann joined United in April 1987 as a B747 second officer and has flown the B747, B747-400, B767 and B737-300. A graduate of the Naval Academy, he served as an FOI/PI in the B747 and B747-400 fleets, and is a Captain in the Naval Reserves. ORDFO Flight Manager Captain Dave Powell is the new Chief Pilot at MIAFO, replacing Captain Steve Forte who is now the Sr. Vice President-Flight Operations. Captain Powell joined United in 1986, and has flown the B737-300, DC-8, B767, DC- 10, B727, B747-400 and A320. He served as a Pilot Instructor for initial startup of the A320, and has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Arizona State University. IADFO Flight Manager Captain Randy DeAngelis has been selected as the new Chief Pilot at SEAFO, replacing Captain Jess Marker who is retiring. Captain DeAngelis was hired in January 1978, and has flown the B737-200, B737-300, B727, and B767. He was a Line Check Airman in the B737-300 fleet and a Standards Captain on the B767. Captain DeAngelis has been a Flight Manager at IADFO since 1996, and has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona and an MBA from Central Michigan University. Captain Cliff Russell, currently a B747 Flight Manager at the Flight Center, is the new Chief Pilot at ANCFO, replacing Captain Al Pittman who is returning to line flying. Captain Russell, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University, joined United in 1989 and has flown the DC-8, B737-300, B747-100/200 and B747-400. He served as a Pilot Instructor and Standards Captain, and has been a B747 Flight Manager since November 1998. "Congratulations to our new Chief Pilots," said Captain Maloney. "They each bring outstanding qualifications to their new positions, and we all look forward to working with them." Flight Manager Openings ----------------------- As announced in Job Postings on August 4 and 5, Flight Operations is seeking qualified candidates for Flight Manager openings at ORD and MIA, to fill openings created by the Chief Pilot promotions announced above. An additional Flight Manager opening at IAD will be posted next week. Flight Manager candidates must have 500 hours experience as a United Captain; LCA experience is preferred. Pilots interested in this position who meet the qualifications should talk to their Chief Pilot and submit a self- nomination form with a resume to WHQLR-Job Posting. The deadline for the ORD opening is August 14, for the MIA opening it is August 15. Fall Domicile Meetings ---------------------- Mark your calendars for the following domicile meetings to be held this Fall: MIA September 14 LAX September 30 DEN October 7 SFO October 13 HNL October 14 SEA November 3 IAD November 12 A date for the ANC meeting will be announced shortly.
