Home Access to SkyNet -- and Flite Site -- Now Available -------------------------------------------------------- SkyNet, United's employee Intranet, is now accessible via the Internet to employees systemwide. Flite Site is the Flight Operations Home Page on Skynet. Employees can log on to SkyNet from home, a library or any location with access to the Internet. All that's needed is a personal computer, modem, browser and an Internet service provider such as CompuServe or America Online. SkyNet's Internet address is: http://united.intranet.ual.com (all lower case). With just a few keystrokes, you can access a wide range of company information, including pass travel service charges, current and past issues of NewsReal, job postings and the Unitel phone directory. A quick-reference card with instructions for logging on to SkyNet will be sent to employees shortly. First-time users should follow the procedures on the security screen to enter and change their passwords. Employees logging on with Internet Explorer 4.0 will need to pass through several intermediate screens before getting to SkyNet's home page. They can do so by clicking on the links on the screen to get to SkyNet. To avoid these extra screens, users can download the Netscape browser from the Internet. The address is: http://home.netscape.com/download (all lower case). Netscape is United's official browser and the only browser supported by United's Information Services Division. To visit Flite Site, from the SkyNet home page click on "Inside the Divisions," then click on "Flight Operations Division." From the Flite Site home page, visit pages such as "Our People and Goals," "Communications," and "Recognition." Clicking on "Sites" leads to pages for the Flight Center, Weather, Air Traffic & Flight Systems and Domiciles. Countdown to Y2K: ATC Update ----------------------------- The FAA has completed all Y2K testing for Air Traffic Control and associated equipment. At all Air Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs) throughout the United States, the HOST computer is Y2K compliant. The FAA recently has been criticized by Congress for being behind schedule in the Y2K effort. Realistically, the administrative portion is still being worked on with completion due at the end of June. Recent test simulations at COS and DEN demonstrated that the FAA ATC system worked well. Flight Operations continues to track the FAA's efforts and build contingency plans for specific failures that may occur. The ATC system relies heavily on telephone circuitry for radio and radar data. Chicago Center, for instance, has eight radar sites sending data into the HOST computer, each of which could provide overlapping coverage if another failed. The backup systems are automatic and complete without update losses. In addition, all major ATC facilities are equipped with emergency generators and battery backups. Radio frequencies are telephone generated from a controller to the actual transmitter site. A telephone failure could cause lost communications. As a precaution, pilots should review Lost Communications Procedures found in the FOM. Welcome Aboard -------------- There was no new-hire pilot class at the Flight Center this week. The number of new hires for 1999 remains at 288. ************************************************************ Flight Operations Communications, WHQVF 847/700-7288 "Flight Ops Flyer" also is available in the United Airlines section of CompuServe under "Pilot Information." ************************************************************
