FLIGHT OPS FLYER MAY 21, 1999 **************** ************ Shuttle Summit Takes a Look Back and Forward -------------------------------------------- Flight Operations was well represented at Shuttle Summit V this week, where nearly 300 employees who touch Shuttle gathered in Los Angeles for the two-day event. Flight Operations' departments represented include: Flight Crew Scheduling; DSL Building; Communications; and the Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle domiciles. Day one consisted of the Shuttle Marketplace, which featured various booths offering information about Shuttle stations, United departments and product enhancements. Participants took close-up looks and received detailed information about innovative products including the Commute-a-walk, a mobile- covered walkway that will be used in several locations for two-end operations; Project Chariot, a mobile podium currently being tested by customer service; and Bulls-Eye, a hand-held bag tag scanner. On day two, participants heard inspirational speeches by United's Chief Executive Officer Jerry Greenwald and United Shuttle Vice President Amos Kazzaz. The men -- both of whom helped design Shuttle from its inception five years ago -- took time to look where Shuttle has been, appreciate its successes and visualize its future. From there, participants divided into groups to plan a strategy for "Shuttle Challenge `99." The three Challenge teams were tasked with finding ways to improve June through September 1999 operating numbers over June through September 1998 numbers in these categories: On Time (OT) Zero Performance; Contribution -- the difference between arrival and OT Zero Departure Performance; STAR Flight Performance; Baggage Handling and Mishandled Baggage Performance; and Freight and Mail Pounds Per Departure. FAA Display System Replacement (DSR) Update ------------------------------------------- DSR transition is continuing. Cleveland Center is nearly back to normal operations using the new system. Chicago Center has stopped using ground delay programs for ORD but still imposes some route constraints and miles-in-trail restrictions. New York Center restrictions have created departure delays out of Newark and La Guardia, as well as route restrictions (FAA preferred route) for flights destined to New York airports that extend west to Wolbach, Nebraska. Efforts are still under way to reduce both the severity and the duration of ATC restrictions during the DSR transition. As the last center to receive DSR will not do so until December, some degree of this new class of restrictions will be with us for the rest of the year. DTK Job Postings Date Extended and Additional Posting ----------------------------------------------------- Last week's "Flight Ops Flyer" noted several job postings resulting from the Flight Center's Fleet Support Restructure project. Those jobs were posted on May 10, 1999, and carried the standard People Division 10-day closing date of May 20, 1999. Vice President-Standards and Training Captain J.D. Whitlatch advises, however, that self-nominations will be accepted until June 11, 1999. In addition, one of the job titles noted in the last "Flight Ops Flyer" was incorrect. The job "Director - Training Development and Facilities" should read "Director - Training Devices and Facilities." That article noted that more Flight Center job postings would be coming soon. One of those, Senior Staff Coordinator - Automation Systems, was posted on May 17, 1999, and a corrected posting went up on May 18, 1999. Again, while the standard 10-day closing period is noted in this job posting, self-nominations for this job also will be accepted until June 11, 1999. More DENTK job postings still are coming, so watch the job postings on Skynet or on local bulletin boards. Welcome Aboard -------------- Twelve new-hire pilots began training at DENTK this week, bringing the total number of new hires for 1999 to 288. Their assignments are: 6 B727 S/O 5 to JFK, 1 to ORD 6 B737 F/O 6 to ORD Safety Issues ------------- There were no Flight Safety inquiries this week. ************************************************************ Flight Operations Communications, WHQVF 847/700-7288 "Flight Ops Flyer" also is available in the United Airlines section of CompuServe under "Pilot Information." ************************************************************
