FLIGHT OPS FLYER MAY 14, 1999 **************** ************ Countdown to Y2K: Videos Aim to Increase Awareness --------------------------------------------------- United Manager-Air Traffic and Flight Systems Captain Bill Cotton took part this week in the production of a video that will help to communicate United's Year 2000 Division mission: to provide safe, uninterrupted service as 1999 rolls into 2000. Year 2000 Division employees are producing two videos: this one for employees to view and one targeted to customers onboard United airplanes that will feature four senior officers. Cotton will appear with representatives from five other United divisions -- Fleet Operations, Information Services, International, North America and Onboard Service -- about what United is doing to prepare for Y2K. "United has worked jointly with the FAA to ensure the ATC system is ready for the new millennium," said Cotton in response to questioning about the readiness of the Air Traffic System. "End-to-end contacts between our airplanes and controllers with the clocks set ahead have been part of the validation. International readiness is also being assessed in concert with other carriers, and operational contingency plans have been formulated to ensure safety even if some ground element is missing. Very thorough tests and evaluation of all aircraft types have been performed by United and the manufacturers, and they are ready to go." Look for the employee Y2K video at your local station or domicile in June. The onboard video geared to customers and starring President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Goodwin and other officers will debut in July and run again in September.
