Countdown to Y2K: ISD Prepares Unimatic System ----------------------------------------------- United's Information Services Division (ISD) is and has been working to ensure United's Unimatic system is ready for Y2K and the many critical horizon dates the system encompasses. A critical horizon date is the date when a system or application can first expect to receive data or experience a condition for the new millennium. According to Applications Development Manager Linda Cook, United's pilot crew management applications -- including the pilot data file and the STARS system -- were remediated as of the end of 1998. Currently, ISD is performing intensive integrated business process testing. "We've built a separate, stand-alone Unimatic processor," Cook explains. "We used the processor to simulate year-end rollover flights and ran the integrated systems in Unimatic including all the steps: flight planning, filing and pre- departure clearance, flying the flight, and landing. Once the flights landed, we made sure Unimatic updated pilot qualifications and checked for alerts." ISD currently is conducting broader testing of business processes and of crew management, including testing the CATS VRU system, line building, trip trades and the many functions used to track pilots and ensure their legality. Plans for these tests will conclude in June and contingency planning is underway. "All Unimatic systems are viewed as mission critical," Cook adds. "We are ready for the year 2000." United Donates B737 to Purdue University ---------------------------------------- United this week participated in a dedication ceremony at Purdue University when the airline donated a retired B737- 222 to the school's Aviation Technology Department. The plane arrived sporting Purdue school colors. As the most widely used passenger aircraft in the world, the 30-year-old retired B737 will serve as a training lab for students in Purdue's three Aviation Technology majors: Aeronautical Technology, Aviation Administration and Flight Technology. United donated a B727 to Purdue in 1993. In March of this year, United donated a retired B737 to Southern Illinois University. UAL Services is coordinating two more B737-200 series aircraft donations this year to Lewis University in Illinois and the "Wings Over the Rockies" aviation museum near Denver.
