FLIGHT OPS FLYER MARCH 19, 1999 **************** ************** Flight Operations Honors 1998 Annual Award Winners -------------------------------------------------- Forty-nine 1998 Flight Operations Annual Award winners joined United President Jim Goodwin and Sr. Vice President- Flight Operations Captain Hart Langer at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago March 16 for a dinner in their honor. This was the second year that winners, their guests and managers gathered near the "Take Flight" exhibit -- which features a United B727 donated to the museum and named for retired United Captain Bill Norwood -- to celebrate success in an awards ceremony honoring the winners' accomplishments. "Each one of you is the best of the best," said Captain Langer in remarks to the group. "I'm honored to salute you for your work and your achievements in 1998." Captain Langer also recognized the spouses, family members and friends in attendance, thanking them for their support for each employee's efforts. The winners were nominated by their fellow employees, and selected for recognition by local and Divisional Recognition Teams. ESOP 3 shares are automatically distributed in a lump sum of stock when the employee retires or leaves United, unless the employee submits a deferral form at least one year before their termination date. The option to defer distribution is available only until the end of the Stock Allocation Period. The ESOP Stock Allocation Period ends in April 2000 for pilots and Salaried and Management employees, and July 2000 for IAM employees. Employees retiring or leaving United in the next 12-18 months must fill out a form if they would like to: 1)Defer their ESOP 3 shares until the Stock Allocation Period is over; or 2) Receive their distribution in five annual installments rather than one lump sum. The form must be received by March 31, 1999, for pilots and Salaried and Management employees, and June 31, 1999, for IAM employees. To receive an ESOP 3 deferral election form, call 1-888-PAL- LINE and follow the prompts for ESOP distribution forms. ESOP 1, 2 & 3 shares for active employees stay in their accounts until they retire or leave the company. At that time, they may either take a distribution or leave the ESOP 1 & 2 shares in the account until age 70 1/2. Without a deferral form, the ESOP 3 shares will be distributed after termination of employment. ESOP 3 distributions are taxed as ordinary income and may not be rolled over into an IRA.
