FLIGHT OPS FLYER MARCH 5, 1999 **************** ************* United Donates B737 to SIUC --------------------------- Senior Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Hart Langer attended a dedication ceremony today at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where United Airlines donated a retired B737-222 to the school's aviation department. The B737-200 -- nose number 9609 -- served United for 30 years, logged an estimated 62,330 hours and flew 31 million revenue miles. The plane was the 24th B737-200 ever built and the seventh delivered to United. Following its final United flight late last year, the plane made its way to Leading Edge in Amarillo, Texas, where it was painted in Southern Illinois University colors. At today's dedication ceremony, Langer commented on United and SIUC's proud association. "Together, United and SIUC have established one of the nation's leading flight operations internship programs. 1999 marks the 12th year of this successful partnership. United has employed more SIUC aviation graduates than any other airline in the United States, including nearly 50 former SIU interns." The plane will serve as a constant reminder of that relationship. Its newly painted fuselage proudly states, "Southern Illinois University Carbondale, in partnership with United Airlines. A tradition of success and a standard of excellence."
