FLIGHT OPS FLYER February 26, 1999 **************** ***************** Reserve Test to Begin --------------------- ORD A320 First Officers on March 2 will be the first United pilots to participate in a reserve system test. The group, which comprises approximately 145 pilots and 30 reserve lines, will test an "Active/Passive" system. As part of Contract 2000 negotiations, United and ALPA plan to conduct four separate reserve system tests, with each test lasting three months. The information gathered from the tests and from surveys will be analyzed and used to help design a new reserve system for implementation into the new contract. The next test is scheduled to begin in April with SFO B767 Captains using a "Hot/Cold" reserve system. Heightened Security Awareness at HNL ------------------------------------ As a result of a recent FAA security audit at Honolulu International Airport, HNL has stepped up scrutiny of security infractions dealing with "piggybacking" by AOA- badged personnel. Anyone entering restricted areas without using their own badge and PIN number will be fined. The only exceptions are for working, uniformed crew members entering the loading bridge (jetway) prior to aircraft departure and for transient aircrewmembers passing through a doorway as a group using a G.I.N. number. To prevent piggybacking, doors must be shut after each person and the next person must then swipe their badge and enter their pin number. Flight Center to Add B767-300 Simulator --------------------------------------- Flight Operations received approval earlier this year to purchase a third B767-300 Full Flight Simulator (FFS). The Flight Center currently operates five full flight simulators and two fixed-base simulators to support training in the B757/767 fleet. The additional simulator -- ordered from CAE -- will possess the same technology as the recently procured B747 and B757 simulators. The B767-300 FFS is scheduled to arrive in Denver on April 1, 2000, with an anticipated ready-for-training date of May 26, 2000. The aggressive installation schedule allows for three weeks to assemble the simulator and four weeks to test its technology and receive FAA certification. Plans currently are underway to determine where to put the new simulator. United is assessing two options. One option entails replacing an older simulator with the new one. A second option would include building a four-bay extension onto the Flight Center's 10-bay "F" building. Dispatch Central NOTAM Desk Expands Operations ---------------------------------------------- The centralized NOTAM Desk that was opened last year in Flight Dispatch has expanded its hours of operation. The desk is now open 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. In April it will begin operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The desk was established as a central receiving and processing facility for all NOTAM's entered into the flight planning system. NOTAM's are received continuously from the U.S. NOTAM Office, Jeppesen, and other government sources, as well as from various departments within Flight Operations. The NOTAM's are screened for validity to our operation, and in some cases, they are re-written for clarity before entry into Unimatic. Flight Dispatch encourages flight crews to call the desk if any questions or comments arise pertaining to NOTAM's. The desk can be reached by phone toll free at 1-800-345-5658, then dial 95. Or you can dial Unitel 8-700-7490. You can also send an e-note using the name "NOTAM,DESK" and the address "EXODD." And finally, you can send an ACARS message to the desk using ACARS MISC code NT and add free text. Welcome Aboard -------------- There was no new-hire pilot class at the Flight Center this week. The total number of new hires for 1999 remains at 133. ************************************************************ Flight Operations Communications, WHQVF 847/700-7288 "Flight Ops Flyer" also is available in the United Airlines section of CompuServe under "Pilot Information." ************************************************************
