A320 Full Flight Simulator #4 Now Ready for Training ---------------------------------------------------- On February 11 the FAA gave Level D approval to A320 Full Flight Simulator #4 at the Flight Center. An extraordinary and cooperative effort between manufacturer Thomson Training and Simulation (TTSL) and United Simulator Services resulted in a five week improvement in the scheduled "Ready for Training" date. This is the second simulator delivered by TTSL under a unique Revenue Sharing agreement whereby United takes delivery of simulators prior to a specific need to train United pilots, and then sells simulator training time to other airlines The early delivery could bring in up to $250,000 in additional revenue. Fleet Operations Completes B777 Engine Upgrade ---------------------------------------------- What the Fleet Operations division dubbed the "Big 777 Engine Modification Campaign of 1998" was completed successfully and ahead of schedule. The campaign involved removing every PW4090 and PW4077 engine on United's B777 fleet -- a total of 78 engines -- for maintenance and upgrade projects. "Early last year, we determined that the PW4090 engines of our B777-B fleet required replacement of an oil seal," explains Vice President-Engineering and Technical Support Lou Mancini. "We started 1998 with a plan to remove and modify all of the PW4090's. Because those engines were still under warranty, Pratt & Whitney installed new seals and other reliability improvements. Once they were completed, our mechanics at the San Francisco Maintenance Center (SFMC) tested the engines. The entire process took about one and a half weeks per engine. We targeted completion of one engine per aircraft by June and the remainder by the end of the year, but we beat those dates by finishing up in mid-May and mid-September, respectively." This already large project became even bigger when the company determined that the PW4077 engines that power United's B777-A's also required work. The company brought those engines into the SFMC for visits lasting nearly three months each, including turbine refurbishment and reliability upgrades. United scheduled the work on the PW4077's in the midst of the PW4090 project and finished PW4077 engine removals before year-end, meeting a very aggressive divisional goal.
