FLIGHT OPS FLYER FEBRUARY 12, 1999 **************** ***************** United Names New Flight Safety Director --------------------------------------- Captain Jeff Bayless recently was named the new director- Flight Safety by vice president-Corporate Safety, Quality Assurance and Security Captain Ed Soliday. Bayless, who will remain an active A320 Captain, has been with United 13 years and most recently served in Flight Safety as acting manager-Flight Operations Quality Assurance. Bayless has also served ALPA national for many years as the Regional Safety Chairman for the Great Lakes Southern Region. As the director of Flight Safety, Bayless will serve as a liaison between United Flight Safety and ALPA, the FAA and the NTSB; he will monitor developments in new technologies, aircraft and procedures from a flight safety perspective; and he will oversee flight safety investigations. B777 Flight Managers Named -------------------------- Vice President-Flight Standards and Training Captain J.D. Whitlatch has announced that B727 Standards Captain Rich Walsh and B777 Standards Captain Stan Gryde have been selected as new Flight Managers in the B777 Fleet. Captain Walsh will assume the duties as Flight Manager-Training and Captain Gryde will assume the duties of Flight Manger- Operations. Both positions are effective immediately. Captain Walsh's past positions include experience as a Standards Captain on the B777, B727, B737-200 and B737-300, as well as a B737-300 Training Check Airman. He participated in the introduction of the B777 into line service and in the development of AQP for the B777 and B737- 300 fleet. Walsh has held various check airman positions since 1989, and has flown the B727, B737-200, B767 and B777 aircraft. Prior to joining United, Walsh was an FAA inspector. Captain Gryde has held the position of B777 Standards Captain since March 1996. He was a B777 LCA Coordinator, an LCA on the B727 and B737-200, and a B737-300 Training Check Airman. He began his career with United in 1978 and has flown the B727, DC10, B737-200, B737-300 and B777 aircraft. Prior to joining United, Gryde flew P-3 ORIONs with the U.S. Navy. First B777 Gets `United First Suite' ----------------------------------- United took delivery last week of its 35th B777 aircraft. This plane -- 2404 -- is the first of United's aircraft to be receiving the "United First Suite," a First Class seat- bed product. The plane's entire First-Class section will consist of 12 suites, with one suite (seat 3A) designated as a crew rest seat. Using a subcontractor, United is installing the seat-bed product on this aircraft and on all future international three-class B777 deliveries. The aircraft is scheduled to fly in United's schedule in March on a SFO-LHR-EWR-DEN routing. United also plans to install United First Suites in its B747-400 fleet, with a retrofit program planned to begin in August 1999. United will be one of only a few carriers to offer a seat-bed product. Dispatch Hires New Dispatchers ------------------------------ A new class of Flight Dispatchers began with United on Jan. 25. The class of eight students will go through five months of training. Half of the class members transferred internally from the Flight Dispatch Service Coordinator desk, and the remaining four employees bring with them operations experience from carriers including Korean Air, British Airways and American Trans Air. This class represents the first group of new flight dispatchers hired in 1999. Flight Dispatch expects to train one additional class of eight students this year. Flight Ops Seeks DENFO Chief Pilot Candidates --------------------------------------------- Flight Operations announced in a Feb. 8 job posting that it is seeking qualified candidates for the DENFO Chief Pilot position. DEN Chief Pilot Captain Joe Rozic will be retiring in July after more than 31 years with United. Qualifications include three years as a UA Captain, two years in UA management, one year as a UA Line Check Airman, Standards Captain or Pilot Instructor Check Airman; and demonstrated leadership ability (e.g. UA, ALPA, military, civic). In addition, the ideal candidate will also have a four-year college degree, one year of UA domicile management experience, one year of DENTK management or project experience, experience working with other Flight Operations departments and other divisions, experience working with industry and government organizations, and international experience.
