FLIGHT OPS FLYER JANUARY 8, 1999 **************** *************** Outstanding Efforts by Employees During the Blizzard of 1999 ------------------------------------------------------------ When a record blizzard hit the Chicago area on January 2, employees joined forces to deal with the situation. United meteorologists got the ball rolling by accurately forecasting the huge storm as early as December 30, and holding to their prediction even when the National Weather Service and other forecasters were downplaying the storm as late as the afternoon of January 1. The Operations Control Center gathered all operating departments for a series of briefings that led to an early decision to reduce operations at ORD on January 2. The reduction in schedule was released to the public early, so that customers could make alternate plans. "This was the best planning job I've seen in nearly 35 years,' said Manager of Flight Dispatch Ron Smith. "With advance planning and teamwork from every department, United was able to serve our customers and return to normal operations as quickly and effectively as possible. Some other airlines were not as prepared and didn't manage as well. Thanks to everyone involved for an outstanding effort under extremely difficult conditions." Flight Operations Surpasses 1998 UECP Goal ------------------------------------------ Once again the Flight Operations Division has surpassed its UECP goal. When the final numbers were tallied, Flight Operations employees had donated $1,577,500 to help the less fortunate, against a goal of $1,561,900. SEAFO takes the honors for most employee participation, with 60% of the domicile contributing to UECP. "Congratulations and my thanks to everyone who participated in the 1998 UECP campaign," said Sr. Vice President-Flight Operations Captain Hart Langer. "We had an ambitious goal for 1998, and everyone in Flight Operations can take pride in our accomplishment. A special thank you to Pilot Instructor Cheryl Kelly, who served as the Flight Operations Division Coordinator, and her team of local coordinators. Our results speak well for their efforts."
