FLIGHT OPS FLYER JANUARY 1, 1999 **************** *************** ************************************************************ * * * Happy New Year!!!!! * * * ************************************************************ LAX B777 Domicile to Open ------------------------- Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung announced in a letter to all pilots today that United plans to open a B777 domicile at LAX effective May 1, or even as early as April 1 if enough crews lateral into the base. Flight Crew Resources initially will post 20 Captain and 20 First Officer vacancies. The domicile will be bid up to a size to support 30 lines as quickly as possible. This is a new equipment domicile under section 8-Q of the pilot agreement and, as such, is subject to relaxed freeze restrictions. Pilots can be awarded an LAX B777 vacancy regardless of any current freeze, however, any current freeze will be added to their new freeze if awarded one of the vacancies. "Along with the normal vacancy bidding process, we are offering contingency bidding for this equipment," Lung says in his letter. "Contingency bidding allows you to bid the vacancy and it will be awarded if you will be in the upper third or upper two thirds of the awards." Please refer to Lung's letter dated Jan. 1, 1999, and available in Flight Offices within the coming week, for additional details and the procedures for bidding. Surplusses Announced -------------------- Flight Crew Resources announced surplusses in the DC10 fleet and the B747 fleet this week. Due to the reduction of DC10 flying systemwide because of aircraft retirement, Manpower Planning is forced to surplus five Captain positions and 15 Second Officer positions at SFO. Pilots volunteering to displace from this current assignment effective April 1, 1999, must submit requests in writing to their flight office by noon, local domicile time, Jan. 20, 1999. As Flight Crew Resources finalizes the alignment of pilots to support domicile flying in the retiring fleets, the department has determined a HNL B747 surplus level aimed at keeping enough pilots at the domicile without creating new training events. This surplus involves eight First Officers and 17 Second Officers. Pilots volunteering to displace from this current assignment effective April 1, 1999, must submit requests in writing to their flight office by noon, local domicile time, Jan. 20, 1999. Two letters from Director-Flight Crew Resources Richard Lung dated Jan. 1, 1999, -- one addressed to SFO DC10 Captain and Second Officers and one addressed to HNL B747 First and Second Officers -- include the surplus details and bumping rights. The letters will arrive in domicile mailboxes in the coming week. United Provides Package Delivery Assistance to UPS and Santa ------------------------------------------------------------ For the first time, United participated in a holiday program to help get packages to intended destinations on time. Under a lease arrangement with United Parcel Service (UPS), United used two of its DC10-30 freighters to operate 21 flight segments within the U.S. during the pre-Christmas package rush of Dec. 21 through 24. The five cities the flights served -- Dallas, Texas; Louisville, Ky.; Ontario, Calif.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Rockford, Ill. -- currently are not on the scheduled routing of United's freighters. "Significant weather disruptions affecting four of the five cities during the period of operation added to the complexity of the routing challenges," notes Carl Norris, Director-United Cargo. "All team members deserve a huge `thank you' for a job well done. Many of the participants were positioned away from their home bases for the pre- holiday season, and their dedication to this successful project is remarkable and greatly appreciated." Flight Ops employees who played a significant part in accomplishing this mission include: Anchorage-based freighter pilots, Flight Crew Resources, Flight Crew Operations Control, Crew Scheduling, Dispatch, Meteorology and the Flight Center.
